The British Memorial Tree.
The British memorial reflects the close bonds between the United Kingdom and New Zealand. It commemorates the sacrifice of those men and women from our countries who have fought and served alongside one another in conflicts around the world since the start of the 21st century.
The Oak and Pohutukawa trees intertwine as they get taller forming a single leaf canopy. Within the branches, the negative silhouette of a soldier can be seen, representing all who have served and continue to serve so that we, who follow, might live in freedom.
My role was to work with CAD to generate plasma cut files from in CAD of interior ribs and exterior sheets, plasma cut them out of 3 and 6mm mild steel sheet, weld the ribs onto the armature and then form the exterior sheets between the ribs in a seamless fashion. Finally grinding the welds so the tree is to appear to be made from solid steel. The Cast bronze canopy was cast in pieces and welded together, again to create a seamless finish.
